The Times Record

Interesting article in our hometown newspaper today, The Times Record:

Pretty cool for her to see this in the paper.

I’ll admit it’s been tough to find words lately to maintain the positive and inspiring spirit that I’ve witnessed out of my mother.  I guess I’m just not sure how we can describe her current position without turning the message much more dour than it’s previously been.

With that, I’m asking for your help.  I want to share stories about mom through the years.  Funny, touching, or just examples of who she is… it doesn’t matter.  I want to hear anything that makes you think of Nan Hinds that I can share with people on this site.

As always, we continue to be touched by the outpouring of support we’ve received through all of this.  I feel guilty for asking for anything else, but any stories we can share would help brighten her days….

Thank you all again,

– Todd

  • Todd,

I have been resisting responding to your amazing words because, frankly, I have no clue what to say. But I do remember a funny story about your Mom and you. I know you remember Scott and Michelle’s wedding. Remember the tux incident?? Todd’s tuxedo came up missing, and there was lots of scrambling to find something the day before the wedding. Nan and Dave were hosting the rehearsal dinner at their home, and Nan was runnig around like a chicken. I remember her saying to me several times, “I’m not going to worry about it now. Let’s just have fun.”. But, of course she worried (she was Nan!!), but she, and we, and fun! And, in the end she was right, it all worked out! That always makes me smile. And I hope it does the same for you!

  • Thank you for posting this Todd. I will be sure to get a copy of it tomorrow at school. I work with some teachers at BJHS who know Aunt Nan and as expected, have nothing but wonderful things to say about her. I continue to be amazed by your words and the strength with which you are handling this difficult time. Love you!

  • Hi Todd…While my husband, Scott, was working in Mobile with Mark Colby, he and Mark were frequently invited to dinner at your parent’s home. Your mother took pity on the singletons living in Mobile without their wives and took them in and fed them a hot, home-cooked meal. Before too long when Scott talked of your mother he referred to her as the “goddess” and would tell me he had the BEST lasagna and homemade bread he’d ever eaten – “even better than yours” he would tell me. Many times he went back to his apartment so stuffed he had a hard time sleeping at night, as he had gorged himself with bread, main course and even dessert she had prepared for the boys.

  • Hi Todd. My husband, Gordon Blackler, also was invited to Nan’s for several home-cooked meals. He’d call me in Maine and tell me about the wonderful meal she’d made. “I think she’s a gourmet cook or something.” He expressed this to Nan and she said, “Oh it’s just because you’ve been eating your own cooking for so long!” He said he couldn’t wait for me to meet her. I’d ask her name, but Gordon being Gordon, could never get her name right. I did eventually get to visit (we now live here) and she was the first person he introduced me to. She was at the pool and greeted me with a big smile and was very nice to me. She took me and some other Maine visitors to Tanger Outlet and to Bellingrath Gardens. She also drove me to hair appointments and gave me several lifts to the library. She is a wonderful woman. I will never forget her kindness to me and to my husband.

  • It is so very encouraging to read these accounts of Nan, a woman that has dedicated her life to improving the lives of so many children and adults with whom she has had contact in her life and career, getting so many very encouraging and loving comments from those very same people. It is such a testament to her life to hear what she truly means to so many.

Each one of us must take her example and purpose in our hearts to make a difference tp someone each day that we may see either struggling or just may need that word of encouragement from someone that cares. TeamNSH must continue to “fight like hell” and make this a better world, as Nan has done all her life!

Thank you Nan and we love you!
    Sid

  • Dearest Nan~
I thought you would be interested to know that Erich and his wife, Sharon, had a baby boy today-named Jax David, weighing in at 8 pounds, 13 ounces and measuring 20 inches long!!! Erich says he has big hands and could be a wide receiver for a football team!
I hope this makes you smile, Nan!!!! I think and pray for you every day!!!!

    Love, Susie xxoo

  • Just wanted you to know that Nan has been on our Prayer list at Bromley Baptist Church for Months now. We know that as of today 6/11/2012 she is at the end of her journey. Even though we were not GREAT friends We ( Rick and Lisa) has worked with your Dad for many years and he is a very special person. I pray for her journey to end into Jesus’s loving arms and the pain and suffering will be no more.
I pray for peace to somehow find the grieving family but I am thinking (as the tears are rolling) that it will be a long time to come. Nan is a special loving wife and mother and we pray for her every day. Also wanted to thank you for this website. This is the first comment I have left but couldn’t let it go untill you knew that praying for her to be as painless as possible is all we can do. You have accomplished a wonderful website and let all of us to get to know your family more. God loves us even though we do not know why, His will be done for a reason and I hope it is for good for the future generations of your loving family.
